Estimation from Indirect Supervision with Linear Moments

چکیده
In structured prediction problems where we have indirect supervision of the output, maximum marginal likelihood faces two computational obstacles: non-convexity of the objective and intractability of even a single gradient computation. In this paper, we bypass both obstacles for a class of what we call linear indirectly-supervised problems. Our approach is simple: we solve a linear system to estimate sufficient statistics of the model, which we then use to estimate parameters via convex optimization. We analyze the statistical properties of our approach and show empirically that it is effective in two settings: learning with local privacy constraints and learning from low-cost count-based annotations.1

Sparse Parameter Recovery from Aggregated Data
Data aggregation is becoming an increasingly common technique for sharing sensitive information, and for reducing data size when storage and/or communication costs are high. Aggregate quantities such as group-average are a form of semi-supervision as they do not directly provide information of individual values, but despite their wide-spread use, prior literature on learning individual-level mo...
متن کاملOptimal linear granulometric estimation for random sets
This paper addresses two pattern-recognition problems in the context of random sets. For the .rst, the random set law is known and the task is to estimate the observed pattern from a feature set calculated from the observation. For the second, the law is unknown and we wish to estimate the parameters of the law. Estimation is accomplished by an optimal linear system whose inputs are features ba...
متن کاملEstimation of Soil Infiltration in Agricultural and Pasture Lands using Artificial Neural Networks and Multiple Regressions
Common methods to determine the soil infiltration need extensive time and are expensive. However, the existence of non-linear behaviors in soil infiltration makes it difficult to be modeled. With regards to the difficulties of direct measurement of soil infiltration, the use of indirect methods toestimate this parameter has received attention in recent years. Despite the existence of various th...
متن کاملCross sectional efficient estimation of stochastic volatility short rate models
We consider the problem of estimation of term structure of interest rates. Filtering theory approach is very natural here with the underlying setup being non-linear and non-Gaussian. Earlier works make use of Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). However, as indicated by de Jong (2000), the EKF in this situation leads to inconsistent estimation of parameters, though without high bias. One way to avoid ...
متن کاملDo Moving Average Trading Rule Results Imply Nonlinearities in Foreign Exchange Markets ?
This paper tests whether fitted linear models can replicate results from moment tests inspired by moving average technical trading rules for weekly foreign exchange series. Estimation is performed using standard OLS and maximum likelihood methods, along with a simulated method of moments technique which incorporates the trading rule moments into the estimation procedure. Results show that linea...
